What is Candida?

Candida, also known as candidiasis, is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of most commonly Candida albicans, a type of yeast that naturally lives in small amounts within the body. Under normal conditions, your body’s healthy bacteria keep Candida species in check, but when the body’s ecosystem is disrupted – due to factors like stress, poor diet, or a weakened immune system – Candida can multiply.

This overgrowth leads to a range of symptoms, including digestive discomfort, fatigue, skin issues, and brain fog. You’ll often find Candida imbalance in the gut, mouth, skin, and reproductive system.

Our Approach to Candida

At The Functional Gut Health Clinic, we take a natural, holistic approach to addressing Candida overgrowth. Our protocols focus on diet, lifestyle adjustments, and targeted supplements to eradicate the overgrowth while restoring balance to your gut. Here’s how we approach Candida:

  • Dietary changes to starve Candida
The first step to combat Candida is diet. We cut out  sugar, refined carbohydrates, and processed foods that feed the yeast. Instead, we focus on nourishing   the body with vegetables, healthy fats, lean proteins, and fiber. We also include antifungal foods such as garlic, coconut oil, and oregano, while avoiding certain fermented foods until balance is restored.

  • Natural antimicrobials
We use a combination of natural antifungals to target Candida directly. Key ingredients like oregano oil, caprylic acid, berberine, and horopito are effective in reducing Candida overgrowth and restoring gut balance. These antimicrobials help break down the fungal cell walls and inhibit overgrowth.

  • Digestive and gut support
Digestive enzymes are used to improve digestion and reduce the fermentable substrates that feed Candida. High-quality pre- and probiotics help repopulate beneficial bacteria in the gut, crowding out Candida and restoring balance to the microbiome. We also incorporate L-glutamine or other leaky gut support products to support the repair of the gut lining and improve gut integrity.

  • Detoxification and liver support
As Candida is eradicated, it releases toxins that can cause discomfort. To manage this, we use binders like zeolite or bentonite clay to help remove toxins. We also support liver function with herbal supplements like milk thistle, ensuring the body can efficiently detoxify Candida byproducts. Hydration is emphasized to aid in the detoxification process.

  • Lifestyle modifications
Stress reduction, sleep, and moderate exercise are crucial in  the healing process. Since stress weakens the immune system, making it harder to fight Candida, practices like yoga or meditation are encouraged to aid recovery. Supporting nervous system health, maintaining sleep hygiene, and engaging in gentle exercise also boost detoxification and improve gut motility.

By following this multi-faceted approach, we help clients eradicate Candida overgrowth, restore gut health, and maintain a healthy balance long-term.

Candida overgrowth can manifest in a variety of ways, including digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, or diarrhea.
